The Elite-8 bracket of the Second Annual Tournament of Books is underway!  Before the world shutdown in March 2020, Mrs. Michelle Dominguez, who is a Reading Specialist at Fostertown ETC, piloted the first such tournament. It was created to celebrate National Reading Month and Read Across America Week. Over her three decades of teaching (all at Fostertown), Mrs. Dominguez has attempted a number of ways to promote literacy to her students. She has researched and developed multiple events and programs to engage scholars with reading.  Not only do her ideas spark a love of books and reading, they also bring together families and faculty.

The Tournament of Books follows the traditional NCAA Tournament bracket format, Sweet Sixteen to Elite Eight to Final Four to the Book of the Year (National Championship). The book tournament has run the entire month of March with the 2022 Book of the Year winner to be announced on April 1^st. Some of the recently read books in the tournament have ignited healthy dialogues on a wide array of topics from individuality to perseverance.

On Wednesday, March 23^rd Ms. Kristie Brand’s second grade class perked up with the sound of the Sports Jam Mega Mix song alerting them of the Book of the Day announcement.  The children stood up and danced joyously while the music blared throughout their classroom. When the music stopped, they immediately stood quietly with their ears glued to the sound of Mrs. Dominguez’s voice over the intercom system as she announced the Sweet Sixteen matchup of the day:  Rosie Revere the Engineer vs. Dragons Love Tacos. After the morning announcement and reading, Ms. Brand’s second graders began to discuss what book should be crowned Book of the Year. Each student expressed their book choice and the reason for it. While there were many different perspectives amongst the scholars, the majority of the children were in agreeance on what book should ultimately win. Ms. Brand quickly turned the debate into a teachable moment on the importance of respecting other’s personal opinions and expressing individuality.  

The children are enjoying the tournament immensely. It has been a great community-building activity and creates a friendly competition between colleagues.

Breakdown of the Tournament of Books:

• Sixteen books were randomly selected into pairs by Mrs. Dominguez’s fifth grade students.

• The bracket was formed and was recreated on a larger scale on a centrally located bulletin board in the main hallway in Fostertown.

• The tournament uses many different tech apps and platforms - Google Classroom, Google Slides, Google Forms, and Screencastify.

• A total of 16 faculty and staff members volunteered to read a book of their choice. This year’s volunteers include classroom teachers, specialists, special subject teachers, and Fostertown Principal, Ms. Ivelisse Mojica.

• Books from the previous tournament are retired and cannot be used again.

• The 16 volunteers scan their selected book into Google Slides, record their reading while their book is in slideshow presentation on Screencastify.

• Each reader is anonymous and as an added fun twist, the students attempt to identify the mystery reader’s voice.

• All classroom teachers have access to the Tournament of Books Google classroom.

• Each day for 16 days, the story of the day is played either on the classroom Promethean or individually on scholars' Chromebooks.

• Every other day, the students vote via google form for their favorite book.  

The favorite book advances to the next round...until we get to the Book of the year.
