A letter from HMS Principal, Ms. Lynnette Brunger for 8th Grade Families

Dear Parent, Guardians and Families of Grade 8 Students,
The end of the year is quickly approaching. It is hard to believe that our Grade 8 students are moving to the high school in the fall. The pandemic caused us to lose out on some face to face time with our students, yet we are so pleased we were able to welcome them back as the school year moved forward.
Celebrating: We will be celebrating our Grade 8 students this year in two ways. We will have a Virtual Ceremony available for viewing beginning Tuesday June 22, 2021 at 3:00 PM. A Drive-Thru will be held on Wednesday June 16, 2021 from 1:00-2:00 PM. You are invited to decorate your car and drive through the Heritage bus circle. Our faculty and staff will be lining the circle to wave and celebrate our students.
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS): Our Grade 8 students will have the opportunity to participate in a ceremony (due to the pandemic last year and not being able to do so). At this time, families cannot attend the live event but we will be live streaming it for all to view.
Regents: This year students are not required to take the Regents. However, if they do, their score on the Regents will ONLY be put on their transcript, if you, the parent or guardian, determine that you would like it to. You may want to consider having your child take the Regents as it can assist them in knowing what to expect moving forward in high school as we anticipate all Regents will be given in the 2021-2022 school year and these exams are not optional. Any familiarity with an exam is helpful on future performance.
Promotion: Moving to the high school requires our students to pass three out of four of their core classes (ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies). Those students who do not meet this criteria will be retained OR must attend Summer School (ESYP) to move forward. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s performance, please contact Susan Barringer, the Grade 8 School Counselor.

*Friday June 18, 2021 11:30-1:30 NJHS Grade 8 Ceremony (students will participate live; ceremony will streamed live for family viewing)
*Virtual Grade 8 Moving Up Ceremony: Available for viewing Tuesday, June 22, 2021 3:00 PM
*Wednesday June 23, 2021 Algebra Regents 8:00 AM
*Thursday June 24, 2021 Earth Science Regents 8:00 AM
