Fourth Grade Scholars at Meadow Hill Take a Sweet Approach to Math

Jelly beans + toothpicks = an afternoon of engineering fun!  Mrs. Coffey, Mrs. Dickson & Mrs. Candal's  4th grade classes have  been learning all about 2 and 3 dimensional shapes and prepping for our 4th grade NYS Math exam at school. Their teachers thought having them do the stem challenge jellybean structures was a deliciously entertaining way of reinforcing what they have learned.  The classes used toothpick STEM structure cards to help kids develop abstract thinking, design and build skills, 2D and 3D shape recognition and shape knowledge.  As they built, the class talked about what 2D shapes made up each of their 3D shapes.  The teachers asked the students to count how many planes {flat surfaces} and how many vertices {corners} their pyramid/ shapes had.  They proceeded in making cubes, then joined them together to make  larger structures.
