Meadow Hill Fireworks! Igniting Confidence in Girls: Lesson 5 Effective and Positive Communication
On 6 March, the Fireworks! team returned to Meadow Hill Elementary School (MHS) to facilitate a lesson on effective and positive communication. Having the largest group of participants to date, the 4th and 5th grade girls came together to participate in this interactive and thought-provoking lesson. After the girls arrived, the Fireworks! team led the MHS students through the opening icebreaker where, in teams of 2, the girls described a picture using only words until her partner could correctly guess the object. This was the first introduction to the importance of effective communication for the lesson. After, the girls broke off into 4 small groups, led by cadets and officers from the Fireworks! team. Scaffolding what effective communication looks like and why it is important, the final discussion led them to making lists of tips and tools they can use in the future. The final activity was a take-home craft in the form of a communication wheel, containing 6 sections for the girls to put their favorite tips and take-aways for communication.
